Although women comprise half the population, the unequal political environment and lack of political consciousness inhibit the implementation of measures which protect women's rights in the political, economic, and social spheres of society.

In order to transform the political environment, it is essential that Korean women take major steps to overcome the vast obstacles that prevent women from actively participating in politics and to create a new political culture where women's political participation is a reality.

As a non-partisan, non-profit organization, the Korean Institute for Women & Politics (KIWP) was established in 1989 with the aim of fostering the inclusion of women in politics by taking these
social realities into account and changing Korea's political environment.

Domestically, KIWP has striven for the enhancement of women's political participation by forming
a "Women's Political Network," composed of women's political organizations. Internationally,
KIWP is a member organization of the Center for Asian-Pacific Women in Politics (CAPWIP),
as the East-Asian Representative.

In December 16, 1998, the UN ECOSOC recommended that KIWP be granted an NGO SPECIAL Consultative Status, as a result of KIWP 's efforts in enhancing women's status and political development. KIWP will use this special recognition to give new momentum to the expansion
